Ancestry of Clara Barton
Clara Barton, known as "The Angel of the Battlefield" during the Civil War, founded the American Red Cross in 1881. Before this, Clara worked as a teacher for 10 years (a career she began in an attempt to overcome her shyness) and would establish one of the first free public schools in New Jersey.
